The Philippines: Worst Surf Trip Ever
The Philippines: Worst Surf Trip Ever
A story about family | 2018
My brother Byron and I grew up on the east coast of South Africa in a city called Durban. Durban goes by the nickname the “Surf City” so when you grow up in a place like that, it’s not long before you find yourself in the ocean, clutching onto anything that floats and riding waves. And that’s how we grew up. Spending thousands of hours soaking in salt water and sunlight while catching waves and making loads of amazing memories.
These days , we don’t live in Durban anymore. Byron lives in the UK and I live in Taiwan. We don’t get to surf with each other very often so when we do, it’s a big deal. In February 2018 Byron came out to Taiwan to visit and to do a surf trip together to the Philippines. We planned every detail for months in advance, waiting in anticipation for the day he arrived. Finally it came. Byron was in Taiwan and we were about to set off on the best surf trip of our lives…
